PeopleSoft Applications: PART 1 PDF Print E-mail

It has been more than 6 months since the last article was posted in here. It is the work load as usual was keeping me away from writing new articles. Even though the work is piled up for the next one year, I wanted to take sometime out to write an article for psadmin.org. Writing gives me pleasure and also helps me to sharpen my knowledge and skills in the subject.

I was musing on selecting the topic to write. I have covered mostly technical only a very few non technical topics. Even though the prime audience is the PeopleSoft Administrators, we  would like to cover other areas. Also I am of the opinion that the Administrators also should try to gain some knowledge on what are the features and how they work in PeopleSoft environment. This would enable them to manage their system and deliver their responsibilities more effectively.

In this series of articles I will try to describe the "Applications" that are available in PeopleSoft and their market share comparative to other vendors in that area.

I would be covering the following Applications for now as I have worked on those applications in the past and have some knowledge on those applications. I would be covering other applications later, which would enable me to learn about those applications first and then I would write about them.

  1. Campus Solutions
  2. HRMS
  3. CRM
  4. Financials
  5. Enterprise Portal

Campus Solutions:

Campus Solutions is the Application for PeopleSoft which not many administrators or developers are familiar with as they are used only in educational institutions like colleges or schools but mostly in universities where as the other products like Finance or CRM are used in many industries.  But the Campus Solutions is a comparatively larger user based application which is accessed by students and faculty community, besides the alumni. For a large university the number of users would go from 5000 to 20000 and above and the concurrent user logins could be anytime 200 to 3000. So this is a invariably larger application compared to ERP.

Those who want to select "Campus Solutions" as their area of expertise, especially the business analysts and developers, the number of job opportunities with this application would be less  compared to CRM or Financials. If you are expert in your area and you are bit above the crowd, then it would be a better choice as there are many universities which pay well for their technical team and the universities don't  hire and fire their employees often compared to other software companies. Which maens the turnover in universities are comparatively low.

Well that is in general view on the employment opportunity. There are quite a few other good things about  PeopleSoft "Campus Solutions":

  1. PeopleSoft Campus Solutions is the world's leading student system and alumni development solution for higher education and is being used at over 800 campuses in more than 20 countries. Not many are aware of this fact. If you are already working in a college or university, then this would be a good choice to expand your knowledge into. Other next market share is SAP, SCT and Datatel are other ERP systems worth mentioning.
  2. Campus Solutions is the most adaptable solution serving all sizes and types of institutions including small, private universities, community colleges, research institutions, and large, public, multi-campus systems.
  3. According to Oracle Corp site, Campus Solutions is the only administrative suite available today that provides students, alumni, faculty, and staff with immediate access to real-time information and connects that information to specific action.
  4. Above all this the application which is being used by future generation. If you are a company which is in PeopleSoft domain and want your name know to the future generation, this is the area if you want to expose yourself to as the students who are going to be the future executives and entrepreneurs of tomorrow.
  5. According to Gartner study, one of the key factor for having a successful ERP system for educational institutions is the integration and inter-dependability of ERP systems with other internal and external systems. For such high integration and inter-dependability requirements, "Web Services" would be the best option.  With this in mind, Oracle released a new package "Constituent Management" which includes "Constituent Web Services" and "External Search" in the new release 9.0.

[to be continued]

PS: = I am neither an Oracle Employee nor I am writing with the detailed survey or in any scientific research anything like that. So Oracle Corp is not responsible for anything that I say here. Also what I say here is with more than a decade of experience in the industry and what I read online and hear from colleagues and friends. This would be a good start for some one who is planning to move to "PeopleSoft" domain from different area and don't know where to start also for those who wants to know more about PeopleSoft modules if they had never worked on such modules.

I do not have count of them. But trust me, there are number of universities and colleges which are using PS. I would try to put together a list of universities and colleges that I know.
