Everyone knows knowledge is power. In technology world data is the ingredient for generating knowledge through software systems. Lately the growth of data the corporations hold is more rapid and the requirement for storage for large amount of data has been increasing. Almost every large corporate company has its own data warehouse to collect and massage to the needs of its departments.
A decade ago one would “wow” for a 10 TB of warehouse. These days any average OLAP database has minimum of one to two TB of data and the data warehouses would be minimum of 100 TB. Once the growth of the data is more and the applications built around them to collect/generate data grows. When the data and OLAP applications increase, the companies have to have datacenters.
The data center technologies have come a long way. Many hardware manufactures like Sun [Moduler Datacenter S20], Rackable [ice cube], Verari [Forest Container] and Dell provide “mobile data centers” in containers. The containers are faster to install relocating them easier. They are green as they use less power for HVAC. They can reduce cost on power up to 80% compared to the regular datacenters. The servers do not have “system fans”. Space occupied can be reduced up to 1/8th of the normal datacenter.
The servers work on DC which increases efficiency and reliability. They can hold up to 1400RU or rackable systems or blades. Their external temperature can be at the range of -20 F to 130 F with 100% humidity, which means it can be stored any where, even in a garage. Sun tested these containers for 6.7 magnitude earthquake
One can store up to 7 to 11 PB (1 PB = 1000 TB). Which means that these suckers can hold two average size data warehouse easily. Forest container of Verari systems can hold up to 11.5 PB. They are more expensive than the containers of Rackable or Dell. But they have more capacity. Dave Driggers of Verari claims in his blog that no one can compare to the efficiency of their BladeRack 2 X-Series when it comes to saving on power cost. Akamai, Lockheed Martin, Microsoft, Qualcomm, Sony Imageworks and Wachovia are some of their top customers. Add as favourites (0) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 361 | Print
