Oracle VM PDF Print E-mail

ImageI have been toying with the Oracle VM as I was requested to recommend best solution for a software training school for their system architecture.  When I was evaluating Oracle VM, came across interesting information about Oracle VM, especially for the shops that are having Oracle/MSSql Server RDBMS and PeopleSoft installations.

I feel there are many advantages in using Oracle VM which I noticed. Feel free to post your comments and questions:

  1. It supports Oracle Enterprise Linux 4 & 5, RHEL 3, 4 & 5, besides Windows 2003, Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP.
  2. I have tried installing Windows NT. It worked even though it is not supported. Not fully tested for all features. Feel free to write your comments if you find anything with NT on OVM.
  3. Can configure its own CPUs, Network Interface and storage.
  4. Browser based VM Manager
  5. Server Hardware does not require a host OS.

Where it can be advantageous for Oracle / PeopleSoft Architecture?
  1. Run training/QA/Dev/Sand Box in one hardware and especially when you are upgrading OS/RDBMS/PT versions, you need not provide for additional hardware.
  2. This is very much useful for Training institutes where they can create about dozens of VM Servers on one single hardware to let the trainees use and no need to invest on infrastructure.

Disadvantages:

  1. The PT versions allowed are only 8.49.07 and above. This does not mean that you can not install lower versions, for non production instances.

Comparision between Oracle VM and ESX VMware:

Where exactly the Oracle VM can be useful to a medium size companies which has few environments?

For example, we have Peoplesoft Finance and HCM and have dev, test, pilot environments beside production. I do not see much of use when in such cases.

It is difficult to generaly state on where and who should use the VM as it depends of every client's requirement. For example if you are having a demo for many versions to which you want go install and have your users try it out, then you can put them all in one box on differnt VM.

I also want to provide two more updates on Oracle VM.

1. If you are on RAC, Oracle does not provide support for RAC on Oracle VM.

2. VMware president and CEO, Diane Greene is leaving VMware and VMware's stocks Tanks. With this development, Oracle VM should gain some market share.

Hi,
Can we install Oracle VM on existing machine w/o uninstallaing Data/OS. Also is it like VMWARE, which we can install on existing system and can install many OS inside vmware env and can share the storage?

Thanks

Sure. You should be able to do all of them as long you have enough storage, memory and cpu to handle the new vm clients.

To share the storage you need to mount them as NFS on to one another like you would do for a real disks in different machines.

Cheers
