What’s New in Tools Version 8.49 for PSADMIN? PDF Print E-mail

This is the list of cool things in the new version that you can recommend your team to motivate them to upgrade to higher verions. I am trying to provide here with the ones which are already not mentioned or known things like Fusion readiness etc. I will be covering mostly for PSADMINS, but will  touch other area also. I always update the articles when ever I feel something can be added to it by editing it or in the form of comment. Feel free to comment on this too. One final and important: Before implementing in PRODUCTION, always make sure that I mentioned here is correct with your other non production environments like sand box before implementing it on your production.

  1. In this tool version 8.49, you can stop and start the database without stopping app server or web server or process scheduler. You need not restart them once the database comes up. This is a good improvement. Earlier when you have about a dozen app servers and half a dozen process schedulers, you need to bounce them all to work properly. This would reduce your down time considerably. Even with the earlier versions you need not restart the web server when you restart the database.
  2. In 8.49 there is a new delivered app engine process PSXPCLEAN to clean up orphaned XML publisher files. If you have high volume of XML publishing, this process would do a lot in cleaning up your database. The lighter database will cut on backup time, recovery and refresh time into non production environments.  This process Cleans-up include the following tables: PSFILEDEFN, PSFILEDATA, PSXPTMPLFILEDEF,PSXPTMPLTRINFO.
  3. This Tools version supports dirty reads with PeopleSoft Query. Dirty Reads mode, also called Read Only mode. It enables to configure servers to avoid table locking while running PeopleSoft queries. When Dirty Read mode is enabled for PeopleSoft Query, the performance is increased as queries do not lock on other INSERT and UPDATE operations.
  4. Data Archive Manager now supports archiving of records with LONG, IMAGE, and ATTACHMENT columns. If you check your database, you will see that the PSIMAGES is the tablespace which is quite large or probably the largest and growth is rapid. Purging/Archiving tables of this tablespace would considerably clean up your database.
  5. With PeopleTools 8.49, BEA WebLogic 9.2 and OAS 10.1.3.1 are supported. There are many good features available in BEA WL 9.2 as well as OAS 10.1.3.1.
  6. You can run Oracle 10.2.0.3 on a 64bit box with this tools version and run app/batch servers on a Windows 2003 64bit box. For app/batch in unix/linux 64 bit is still not supported.
  7. Oracle 11g is supported for limited OS versions, with 8.49.
  8. You can do case-insensitive  search of objects in Toosl 8.49.

Things that are added in earlier Tools Versions which some of us are not aware:

  1. New Function "WriteToLog" added from version 8.45.

Oracle certified this version with RDBMS versions in their Off Cycle Certification program in late 2007.
